A Place To Learn About Tolerance And Bigotry...

The Quindío is not only crops of coffee and theme parks. It is also a place in which matters more profound and far-reaching, from a social point of view, have happened.

And this is what this cemetery represents: a place in which the common sense overcame tradition; the people to the dictatorship; the human being to the animal.

So yes, we are recommending that you visit a cemetery, but not any cemetery, one very special and emblematic.

The Cemetery free of Circasia is a monument to freedom, tolerance and love as its name suggests. This field holy one was built in order to give burial to the dead people regardless of political party, religion, social status, skin color or any other particular characteristic.

All this was happening in a time in which, in Colombia, there was religious fanaticism and sectarianism, to such an extent, that people are denied the burial of their deceased relatives in the cemeteries officers not to belong to the religion or political party at the time.

¿When it was founded, and by whom?

This place has different stages and on several occasions has been nearly destroyed by the intolerance. The Cemetery was opened in 1930 after incredible struggles against the government, church and society.

¿Where it is located?

This unique and original mausoleum is located on the outskirts of Circasia, Quindío, a town that is located 10 kilometers from Armenia, capital of the department and can be easily reached by public or private transport.
