Montenegro is the municipality in the western part of the department of Quindío, Colombia. It was named for the dark green of the trees that originally covered the hill on the site where is now the center of this village, which was visible from other parts of the region, as it rose above the surrounding guadua bamboo forests.
Between 1897 and 1904, Montenegro was officially known as Villa Quindio. The city is located at an average altitude of 1300 meters above sea level. The municipality of Montenegro has a total extension of 148.92 km2.
¿When was it founded?
Montenegro was founded the 10 of September of 1,890 under the name of "Villa del Quindío," which is elevated to the municipality of Filandia the 10 of september of 1897, retaining the same name.
Was subsequently elevated to the category of municipality with the name of Montenegro, through the ordinance number 14 of the 1,911 on April 4. This was founded by Michael Duke, Noah Joy and Justinian Cardona.
¿Where is it located?
Montenegro is located 10 km west of the capital of the department, Armenia.
The boundaries of Montenegro are mainly formed by three rivers. To the north, the Oak River forms the boundary with Quimbaya, to the east and south, the river Mirror forms the border with Armenia and the Thebaid, and west of the river is the border with the neighboring department of Valle del Cauca.
